My name is Martha Salzman. I am a literacy coach with the St. Paul Public School’s Center for Professional Development assigned to work at Hancock-Hamline this school year. This is my fifth year as a coach. In previous years I rotated to four schools throughout the week. This year I get to be at Hancock full time and I love it! I am working mostly with grades 4-6 and the Learning Center on reading and writing. I am enjoying the opportunity to be in some of the same classrooms every day or at least several times per week. I am already feeling very connected to the students and staff at Hancock. They couldn’t be more welcoming.
Prior to becoming a coach, I taught for 11 years in a multi-graded classroom (grades4-6) at Nokomis Montessori on the East Side. I miss the classroom very much, which makes my connections here even more special.
I have an undergraduate degree in American Studies from the University of Minnesota. I received my teaching training from St. Thomas University in St. Paul. I got my Montessori training and certification and my Master’s Degree from St. Catherine’s College in St. Paul. Finally, I received my Reading License from St. Mary’s College in Winona this past year.
Outside of my school life, I love to take long walks around Lake Harriet with friends, see movies with my husband and sons, read and get together with members of my large extended family.
