Hancock Hamline University Collaborative Magnet School has a Language Academy (LA) and an English Language Learner (ELL) Program to serve non-native English speaking students.    This program services students who are beginning to learn English.  The students in this program are part of the mainstream classroom, and also spend approximately two-three hours each day working with a LA Teacher to develop English skills through content.  We have one LA Teacher for each grade level 1st-6th. In addition to these six LA Teachers we also have four full-time ELL Teachers who

work with the ELL students who are at a more advanced level of English language acquisition.  These teachers work with their students in a variety of settings, including team teaching in the mainstream classroom as well as small group literacy and language instruction.   Kindergarten's English Language Program in our building is the Kindergarten Language Development Model (KLDM).  With this model an ELL Teacher and mainstream teacher work together to give intensive language support to Kindergarten students who are at the beginning stages of English language acquisition.
