Welcome to Ms. Susan's Room
Ms._Susan
Ms. Susan
Hello, my name is Susan McNamara, and my students call me Ms. Susan. I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor degree in Child Psychology and Development.
I received my master of science degree from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, and my 1-6 teaching license as well.
I have been teaching for 10 years and have taught 1st, 5th and 6th grades.  I have been teaching 6th grade at Hancock for 8 years, and have found these years to be my most rewarding.  I enjoy teaching 6th grade immensely.  Sixth graders have insights and discussions on matters important to them, often using higher order thinking, which makes teaching 6th grade exciting.  I teach all of the required classes for 6th grade, except those taught by our building specialists, which include computer class, science and physical education.
Reader's and writer's workshop are the models adopted by the St. Paul school district, as well as the Everyday math workshop. The workshop models allow for student choice, independence and responsibility,  as well as an opportunity to conference with the teacher, one on one, on a regular basis.   Social studies in 6th grade focuses on ancient civilizations, and how they have influenced our present day cultures.  We also integrate some additional science lessons, word and map skills and art into our 6th grade curriculum.
Hancock is a "Peace Site"  and peaceful conflict resolution is taught in our classroom, as well as tolerance and respect.  We do a lot of group work, which encourages students to be both learners and teachers with their peers.  Every year we experience learning together, in a safe, accepting, and nurturing environment.
When I am not at school I enjoy spending time with my husband (who is also a teacher) and our dog, Joe, as well as time with my parents, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.  I also enjoy spending time with a few close women friends and going for bike rides and walks around Como Lake.  I truly love to read, and spend my summers reading, doing home projects, gardening and spending more leisure time with my husband.
