All of the teachers on the sixth grade team at Hancock Elementary work strongly together to provide an excellent education for all children. Our teachers use Reader's Workshop, Writer's Workshop, and Everyday Math; models adopted by the St. Paul District. This year we will also be going to Camp St. Croix in Hudson, WI for 3 days and 2 nights! This is an environmental camp where students and adults build community and learn respect for self, others, and nature. Social Studies and Science Standards are learned through this awesome experience. Students see specialists for Science, Computer, and Physical Education. The Reader's and Writer's Workshop models promote student indepencence, student choice and self assessment. Students receive guidance and individual conferencing from the teacher. Math skills and vocabulary are emphasized throughout the Everyday Math Series. The theme in Social Studies is Ancient Civilizations which focuses on Egypt, China, and Mesopotamia. Other areas include map reading skills. At Hancock we provide many opportunities for our sixth grade students to be involved in activities that promote civic responsibility. Some of these include recycling, school patrol, service learning and helping the kindergarten students get to their buses. Sixth Graders work with Hamline students and professors on a service learning project focusing on helping the homeless population in St. Paul. Last year students raised $700.00 and donated it to a local homeless shelter. This project is an on-going collaboration with Hamline University. As part of our collaboration with Hamline University, the sixth graders explore the process of preparing for college and understanding the choices available at different post-secondary schools. At St. Paul College, students are exposed to a variety of trades, from auto-mechanics to culinary arts, to nursing. At Hamline University, the sixth graders enjoy a real slice of college life. During their day on campus, the students tour the campus and peek inside a dorm room. They dine in the cafeteria and even attend an actual class. Not only do the students experience Hamline's campus, but they also interact with Hamline students on a daily basis in their classrooms at Hancock.
