The 2nd Grade team is a caring and committed group of teachers. A strong team, we meet frequently in order to provide the best possible learning environment for our students. Hamline University student helpers, Educational Assistants, and a specialists work with non-english speaking students arriving from new countries. This helps to lower class size and meet students’ needs throughout the year. We are able to provide small group

and one-on-one instruction in math, reading, and writing. We follow the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop model which offers daily practice in reading and writing and allows children to work independently at their individual levels. Throughout the year students publish a personal narrative, a “how to” project, a picture book, and a nonfiction book. Art lessons in painting with primary and secondary colors, drawing bending bodies,

weaving, and stamping are provided through the ArtStart grant. We also have a strong tie to the community through our partnership with Hamline University's Sociology Department. With their guidance, and the involvement of Hamline University students, we are able to explore the nearby community and gain multicultural awareness. We take annual field trips to the Chinese Dance Theater production and the Children's Museum.
