Mr. Johnson and Mr. Engstrom at the 4th Grade dance
The fourth grade at Hancock Elementary welcomes students with open arms. We have four sections of fourth grade, and an additional teacher who works specifically with English Language Learners. Additional ELL teachers and several teaching assistants allow us to provide individualized instruction for our students.
All fourth graders begin their day with a morning meeting. This is an opportunity to get to know one another and start our day out by having fun! Fourth graders are offered daily experiences reading at their independent level during Reader's Workshop. One of our goals for reading is to create an environment where students truly read for enjoyment. Reading Around America is an at home reading program that helps students achieve this goal.
Fourth graders also participate in a daily Writer's Workshop focusing
on the writing process and various genres of writing. In Social Studies, we focus on the regions of the United States and Minnesota history. In Science, we study the human body, water, magnets and electricity, and astronomy.
We take three field trips that support and extend the classroom learning experience. Our classes take field trips to Fort Snelling, Mill City Museum and the Minnesota History Center.
Our collaboration with Hamline includes a service learning project with Professor Jean Strait. Students learn about the issues associated with Homelessness in the Twin Cities. We also work with Professor Steve Jongewaard and his students for a project based on social studies standards. Fourth graders also swim in the Hamline pool each month.
